Lens Review Date: October 21, 2021 I can recommend this lens: Yes | Price: $560.00 | Rating:ten

Pros: ++sharpness, f1.four, smashing bokeh,
Cons: heavy, large (for a 35mm lens), AF issues
Sharpness: x Aberrations: x Bokeh: 10 Autofocus: 5 Treatment: 7 Value: 9 New or Used: Used Photographic camera Used: K1, K3, K3-3

I bought the Sigma 35 f1.4 in parallel to the FA31, which I have since more than 10 years. This are two different lenses for different usages.

The Sigma is razor sharp - already wide open. The edges and even the corners are already very sharp wide open up - much superior to the FA31. With the object shut to the lens information technology is perfect; but for landscape there is the flaw that the edges have a closer focus compared to the center:

The micro contrast is on a very high level already at f1.4 and outstanding at f2.0 - biggest difference to FA31, which needs F2.8 for similar micro contrast in the center and never reaches this micro-dissimilarity in the corners.

Aberrations are negligible and not field relevant.
The Bokeh is the reason to go for this lens. Already broad open the bokeh is pleasant:

Stopped downwardly to f5.half dozen information technology may expect harsh - but just cropped. If yous look 1:1 on the flick it pleases again:
.
The AF is a unlike story; I got the lens from a Pentaxian who was very unpleased with the AF on his K1-II and used mostly >F5 to get abrupt images. I tried to fix this issue with the Sigma USB dock, but was not successful - between 1m and infinity I would needed several additional steps. Then I chosen the Sigma service and sent the K1 and the Sigma lens to service and for a pocket-sized money I got back a perfect lens in relation to the AF. At present I should requite 8 of ten points for the AF rating, but the AF is not too fast and the problems should find their way into the rating.
As the lens is quite heavy and large, the handling is not the all-time. If I accept to walk a lot, I mainly take the FA31 or the DA*55 due to the lower weight and size. But if I have only this chance to go a perfect motion picture I would take the Sigma and ignore the hurting (the pain is for at present, the peachy picture forever ).
With both K3s the Sigma does not perform as perfect as with the K1. With the Crop sensor the FA31 is the better pick for me.

Lens Review Date: Apr 18, 2021 I can recommend this lens: Yeah | Price: $450.00 | Rating:ten

Pros: Really sharp
Cons: Heavy
Sharpness: 10 Aberrations: 9 Bokeh: ten Autofocus: ix Handling: ix Value: nine New or Used: New Camera Used: K1ii K3

I wanted a fast prime lens for use with my K1ii & K3, the 35mm is an platonic length to use on a total frame and ingather sensor. The Broken doesn't disappoint and lives upward to the reputation this lens has, the other plus signal is it is very abrupt and excels when used on the K1ii with information technology'south high resolution sensor. The merely downsides are it is not conditions sealed and the weight, only if your conveying a K1ii weight is non your primary concern.

Lens Review Engagement: January 4, 2020 I tin can recommend this lens: Yeah | Toll: $380.00 | Rating:x

Pros: Clarity, color pop, sharpness
Cons: boring auto focus

One of my favorite lenses and became so very fast.
First-class near everywhere with my one and simply complaint being focus speed.

The lens is slightly heavier than imagined, but is build quality feels like a tank.
Excellent even wide open and produces crawly texture, color, sharpness and bokeh and I am however to find a problem with aberrations.

I highly recommend this lens.

Lens Review Date: October 13, 2019 I can recommend this lens: Yes | Cost: None indicated | Rating:10

Pros: Excelent optics
Cons: Weight, size, just MF on film torso.
Sharpness: 10 Aberrations: 10 Bokeh: x Autofocus: 9 Treatment: 9 Value: nine New or Used: Used Camera Used: K5, K20D, MZ10

While I also take FA35/2 and quite potent Sig17-50/2.eight, this lens optically is far superior to both. Bokeh is creamy, resolution is superb, aberations are well controlled. Information technology is fully usable at F1.four existence amend than FA35/two at F2.8 concerning fine detail rendering! Sigma stopped down to F2 is perfectly fine for hi-res piece of work and around F4 information technology peaks in fantabulous detail resolving power. Swell lens.

With Pentax IBIS SR it enables user to shoot low light like amuse as well.. 1/10S at F1.4 and ISO1600-3200 gives you lot options even in very nighttime scenarios. Portraits? Perfect.

It is very sad, that Sigma decided to abandon Grand mount

Pros: excellent, no surprising, usable at all apertures. Bought with the new mount.
Cons: big, heavy, a no smoothen focus ring, vignetting at f:1.4 until f:2.8, AF problems for some samples. Need Sigma Dock. No updated firmware since the first release.
Sharpness: 10 Aberrations: ix Bokeh: x Autofocus: 8 Treatment: nine Value: 10 New or Used: New Photographic camera Used: Pentax K-i (upgrade mk II)

Excellent, even amend on Pentax K-ane (MK II) than Catechism EOS 6D, 5D MKIII (I endemic Sigma Art EF 35/1.iv & 50/i.four). Besides, Thousand-one includes excellent SR/IBIS. I am a Manual focus "fundamentalist" and the focus ring is not as polish every bit the vintage lenses' as Leica-R lenses' I own nor the Limited edition Pentax lenses'... The lens is very big, heavy, non discret only to use for special purpose, not for travelling... except if it is your unique lens...
Squeamish CA control. A must have for a 35mm focal length, merely you could expect for the Pentax FA SMC FA 31/1.8 Express if i.eight aperture (vs one.4) is non an consequence.
A beautiful prime to complete the collection with the new Hard disk drive PENTAX-D FA ★ 50mmF1.iv SDM AW...

Lens Review Date: October half-dozen, 2017 I tin can recommend this lens: Yes | Toll: None indicated | Rating:10

Pros: Precipitous from f/1.4. Great bokeh. Built like a tank
Cons: Nothing of import

This lens is Astonishing. In that location is really no Pentax rival in the focal range. The FA31 has slightly nicer bokeh and colour rendition, but this thing is the sharpest f/one.4 lens I have used. CA is negligible. AF is silent, decisive and authentic - if not super fast. The focus ring is big, smooth, and well damped.

Sure it's biggish, and certainly heavy, but what do yous wait? There'due south a lot of big, highly corrected drinking glass in that parcel. At least the 67mm filter bore is a familiar one in the Pentax ecosystem.

Negatives, for what they're worth: the focus ring moves in the "incorrect" direction and the depth of field scale is, permit us say, minimalistic.

Sample shots. All taken wide open up.

Lens Review Date: June 23, 2017 I tin can recommend this lens: Aye | Price: $852.00 | Rating:x

Pros: Sharpness, f/1.4, keen colour, great bokeh, silent and fast AF
Cons: None
Sharpness: 10 Aberrations: 10 Bokeh: 10 Autofocus: ten Handling: 10 Value: 10 New or Used: New Camera Used: Pentax K-five

I fell in love with that marvel once I mounted it onto my K-5. The purpose of that lens was to use it as a daily lens on a new K-1, which I have to buy still. The operation with the K-five is only vivid.

I took several shots and can see the image is sharp from f/1.4. Color rendition is just as fantastic as the bokeh is. I was positively shocked with very accurate, silent AF. Though, conscientious inspection showed the lens had a pocket-size dorsum-focus of +ane, easily corrected in the camera.

The lens came with the mount adjusted for One thousand-1, so no worries. Cheers Tau-Ceti for enlightening me on the matter.

A casual photo my wife took simply after starting using the lens, f/two, t=i/750, ISO 160 before the slight BF was corrected:

EDIT:
Some other shot, at f/1.7

Lens Review Engagement: Nov 30, 2016 I can recommend this lens: Yes | Price: $450.00 | Rating:10

Pros: Sharpness, color rendition, bokeh, build quality, groovy AF
Cons: None for me
Sharpness: x Aberrations: 10 Bokeh: 10 Autofocus: 10 Handling: x Value: 10 New or Used: New Camera Used: K-3

The Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG HSM ' Art ' is a stunning lens on APS-C cameras. The sharpness of this lens is outstanding IMO, and rivals my Pentax 100mm f2.viii Macro WR. It renders colours beautifully, and the bokeh is creamy smooth. As it is not a Pentax lens, the in-camera correction functions do not work, just this lens does not demand them. The build quality is excellent. The AF is fast, silent and very accurate on my copy. The image quality is already swell at f1.iv, and gets better as the lens is stopped downwards. Because the images are and so precipitous, cropping is non an consequence if you require a little more " reach." I practise not find the weight of this lens an issue at all. There is not 1 negative thing most this lens for me. I can highly recommend information technology.

There is an excellent in-depth review of this lens on the forums.

Lens Review Date: May 15, 2014 I can recommend this lens: Yes | Toll: $670.00 | Rating:10

Pros: Extreme Sharpness from F1.4, shine bokeh, superquiet autofocus, total time manual focusing, looks, experience, optional dock adjustment, close minimum focusing altitude
Cons: Big for a 35mm, very heavy, vignetting at 1.4, not completely silent in video using onboard sound, Slight FishEye Pincushion for Objects closer to camera
Sharpness: 10 Aberrations: 10 Bokeh: 10 Autofocus: ix Handling: ten Value: x New or Used: New Camera Used: One thousand-01/K3/K5 II

I just had to give it a 10 but nevertheless I'thou going be super nitpicky since I want to be thorough in the review to requite you an idea of what to expect.

The negatives:

  • Pivot cushioning at closer objects
  • Heavy weight and size of lens(EDIT: Y'all learn to go around this esp for the IQ)
  • Lack of Lightroom iv and Aftershot lens profiles(EDIT: LR five has them)
These negatives can be overlooked if you tin can build your own LR contour(anyone accept whatsoever to share?), use PTLens or some other postprocessing software that has a lens profile. It's not too bad of a distortion but with a lens this abrupt, you come across the lines curving.
The weight is a drawback for heavy usage and even normal travel. It'due south heavier than all my other lenses as information technology'due south got quite a bit of glass. My heaviest zoom lens in the range is a Tamron 28-75 f2.eight and it's lighter than this. Expect to be property it a lot with two hands. The size isn't bad merely because the weight is throughout the lens information technology becomes a gene when holding with ane hand because it is heavier in the front end as a issue of longer length. Definitely harder to hold than my tank-like all metallic Pentax FA 50mm f2.eight macro which is a fairly large 50mm.

The reason for the 10 is that despite all this, in the end the main reason I got this lens was for depression light and faster shutter speed usage weighing heavily on sharpness and bokeh at f1.4 and this delivers in what is most important: image quality. I couldn't believe it when the image was tack sharp at 1.4 and stopping down had little change. So to requite the x I have adjusted my thinking to do the following:

  • gear up pincushioning in PP(although I haven't fixed withal considering I don't know how to build a contour).
  • working out to carry this everywhere I go.
Update: Lightroom v has profile corrections. My go-to lens. I'd run backwards, forwards and sideways onto streets to use this lens instead of a wider bending or short telephoto lens. Likewise, after getting a K3, able to hold in one manus hands although withal not for long.
Update ii on 8/1/2014: I find this easier to handle the more I get used to the weight distribution and can agree in ane hand for extended periods over an hour west/ K3 and even with K-01 for much shorter periods, although w/ two hands or grip/strap. The autofocus will chase occassionally if you striking a actually night or bright expanse. The flare resistance is not as good as say a DA15 but still better than FA fifty and 28, Tamron 28-75 and 17-50 lenses. The focus band is just and so well fabricated and the build quality is amazing. I am so happy with this lens and am certain I volition never need to compare this to a FA31 and information technology's helped me to tame my LBA every bit I now simply get lenses I know I will have no qualms about. I will nickname this lens, my LBC for "Lens Ownership Cure".
Update 3 on 12/24/2014: Works great w/ the Pentax HD 1.iv Teleconverter. Information technology actually recognizes F1.four but it measures light effectually a stop or more than higher and reflects this in the slower shutter speed and so it'southward really at F2.8?). I need to change the photographic camera to +7 to focus correctly. I am considering purchasing the USB dock to fine melody it. I find it is my "go-to" lens when I want to take the all-time possible lens for almost all situations. If I could only take one lens, this would be it. I'd become the K3 and this lens. Absolutely crawly lens. I apply select focus and usually information technology gets focus downward.

Lens Review Engagement: Apr 8, 2014 I can recommend this lens: Yes | Toll: $900.00 | Rating:ten

Pros: Sharpness, f1.4, bokeh, autofocus, build quality
Cons: Rather heavy
Sharpness: ten Aberrations: x Bokeh: ten Autofocus: 10 Handling: 9 Value: 10 New or Used: New Camera Used: Pentax Yard-3

This lens is my absolute new favorite. Can't imagine how I could have lived without it. Outstanding sharpness and expert handling despite the weight.

I observe the autofocus fast, at least fast enough for me. I have no feel with Canon or Nikon lenses just in that location are no complaints what and so e'er. I tested switching from close up to infinity and information technology was quick and accurate.

With this lens and the K-three I found that I could actually ingather pictures to friction match mid range tele lenses. I'm completely sold on this lens. Usually this stays on the K-3 and I switch other lenses on the old One thousand-5II.

Lens Review Date: March vi, 2014 I can recommend this lens: Yes | Price: $930.00 | Rating:10

Pros: Stonking image, congenital like a tank, quiet focussing
Cons: Built like a tank!
Sharpness: 10 Aberrations: 10 Bokeh: ten Autofocus: 8 Handling: 8 Value: 10 New or Used: New Camera Used: K-X, Chiliad-01

I am not a very scientific reviewer. This lens is large, heavy and built like a tank - proper oldskool style!

It offers stonking image quality. The autofocus is tranquillity simply I don't feel it'southward particularly fast or accurate (when compared to Canons), but mayhap this is influenced by the body to which information technology's attached. Bokeh, equally mentioned previously is lovely - plainly as a upshot of the 'rounded' blades. The 1.4 is very usable. Obviously, DOF is very shallow broad open merely for what I apply information technology for I seldom stop down smaller than ii.eight.

Down side is that it'due south big and heavy. Although the build quality is fantabulous, I don't call back yous'll want to be handling it crude - it's a fine musical instrument and should be handled with care. A fantastic lens just I'd be wary taking it out in the field. Additionally, I sought out a 35mm because my old 50mm M 1.iv was a bit too long on the crop sensor. However, it might be because of my previous personal shooting addiction of erring wide, I found that even 35mm is merely a tad long.

Again, great great lens merely heavy and pricey (though not when compared to competition and Pentax own). I've subsequently picked upwards a Sigma 30mm EX DC 1.4 which is non in the aforementioned class but at less than one-half the money I'thou non too bothered if I beat it about a chip!

Lens Review Date: Feb 19, 2014 I tin recommend this lens: Yes | Price: $825.00 | Rating:10

Pros: Sharpness, color rendition, build quality, bokeh
Cons: It's big and heavy simply that'southward expected of a f/1.iv
Sharpness: 10 Aberrations: 10 Bokeh: 10 Autofocus: x Treatment: 10 Value: 10 New or Used: New Camera Used: K5 and K-r

Wow. just wow.

I had very high expectation for this lens, being close to $1000CAD (with taxes). Just I must say that it's even better than I expected. I unpacked it, stuck it on my camera on P Mode to attempt information technology out and the starting time picture was amazing, no fiddling around trying to find it'south sweet spot... f/1.4 to f/22 is it'southward sugariness spot.

This lens is Precipitous, wide open or stopped downwards. If y'all're looking for a precipitous 35mm this is it. The colors are very well rendered and the HSM is responsive, fast and so very quiet (amend than Pentax's SDM on all fronts) Built quality is merely amazing and the bokeh is oh so dainty. And it's pretty too. I could get on and on describing how good this lens is but from the other reviews I think this is already clear.

The cons, if we tin can call them that: Information technology is a very big lens (in the Pentax globe) and information technology is heavy. On the K5 information technology isn't and so bad, it is fairly well counterbalanced and information technology is almost perfect when the photographic camera has a grip. Merely on the K-r it makes the kit very front heavy. Because the 1000-r grip isn't ideal for me, my right hand started to fatigue subsequently merely a few minutes of shooting, e'er fighting to go on the camera leveled. Being a 35mm lens it will mostly be used handheld and if your camera is light, it might issues yous after a while. But for it'south sharpness and awesome bokeh, it's still worth it.

One more matter, and so far it always under exposed a scrap, perchance half a stop or and then. To me information technology's a showtime, my other sigma lens always over exposed. Over again, no big deal.

This lens is a 10/10 no doubts about it. Not the cheapest 35mm but I have yet to detect another lens that volition impress me that much.

Heavy, and the focus band is irksome, just information technology is completely worth those trade offs. In a real life examination, the sigma was amend than the pentax in this instance, simply the 31mm I liked the bokeh a bit more in some cases. The sigma was incredibly sharp at any aperture, and I feel similar this is the best image quality my M-5 has e'er produced. The 77mm would be just equally good as this if it didnt take so much purple fringing. Information technology's about as sharp as the 77mm (my favorite lens for rendering).
